Last September, actor John Travola walked into a Jaguar dealership in Santa Monica, Calif., for 10 minutes, only to find when he left that thieves had boogied off with his 1970 Mercedes 280 SL. Today, Los Angeles police said Travolta's car had led them to a bust of a major classic car theft ring -- but not before the Mercedes was chopped.
The auto theft task force in Los Angeles county followed evidence from the theft of Travolta's car to a ring and chop shop that targeted classic and older Mercedes, according to the L.A. Times. Two men were arrested in December, but their charges weren't revealed until today as the agents pursued other leads. While eight stolen vehicles were recovered intact, Travolta's Mercedes, similar to the one shown above, was "in pieces," according to officials. An intact 280 SL in good condition can sell for up to $100,000, especially when painted in the fetching brown shade. Condolences to Mr. Travolta for suffering the chopping of a classic car, a fate no one should suffer. At least its destruction was not for naught.
