A 14-year-old has been arrested on two counts of first-degree murder in Coeur d’Alene in the killing of his father and younger brother.
The two were shot and killed Monday night in a home in the 1300 block of North First Street and police arrested the juvenile suspect in that shooting shortly after 9:30 p.m. Kootenai County Jail records show the teen was arrested at the same address as the shooting.
Tuesday morning, Coeur d’Alene police identified the suspect as Eldon Samuel III, 14. Samuel is suspected of killing his father, Eldon Samuel Jr., 46, and his younger brother, Jonathan Samuel, 13. Police identified the teen, even though he is a juvenile, because he is being charged as an adult in the killings.
Police say Samuel called 911 to tell them a shooting had occurred. Authorities say that he used a handgun, shotgun, knife and machete in the killing of his father and brother. Authorities say the teen shot his father in the head and then shot, stabbed and cut his younger brother.
A search warrant was executed around 1 a.m. Tuesday. Inside the home, officers collected evidence and documented the crime scene.
The family had recently moved to Coeur d’Alene from California. A representative from St. Vincent de Paul confirmed the victims were living in transitional housing.
At Canfield Middle School, where younger brother Jonathan went to school, a crisis assistance team has been called in and counselors and school administrators are working to help students cope with this tragedy.
The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office said that Samuel will be charged as an adult for the murders. His bond has been set at $1 Million. A preliminary hearing will be set for Samuel in the next several weeks.
Samuel is in custody at the Kootenai County Public Safety Building.
