NextGen, one of the country's largest websites, announced its closure in order to protect all of its users. The torrent site had been in operation for over 4 years, offering various content including the latest films and TV shows. The private tracker NextGen was the 225th most-visited site in Denmark. However, for reasons the operators didn’t reveal the site has closed its doors. It also set out the notice to more than 40,000 users, which suggested that all was not well. The site administration explained that it was done only for the safety of the users, because during the last few weeks NextGen has attracted much extra attention.

Actually, it is not unusual for websites to shut down without much of an explanation, but the rumors regarding the closure cannot stop. For example, some link it to The Pirate Bay founder Gottfrid Svartholm’s alleged connections to NextGen, as NextGen had dealings with PRQ, a company historically owned by Gottfrid, in the past.

On the other hand, a successful site closed down so quickly not without a reason – some believe that the pressure from the authorities had been mounting for some time. 4 years ago, Danish police arrested then 19-year-old law student Halfdan Timm, suggesting he was the NextGen operator, because he had interviewed an operator of NextGen in-depth, which made the police believe there had been a connection. Later, more information was appearing on the Internet about the operators of the tracker, and they were alleged to earn $200,000 a year from the service. Anonymous critics publicly linked the names of two men to the site.
