BitTorrent developers have recently unveiled plans for their popular file-sharing client uTorrent. The most important change is moving the app to the web browser: in other words, uTorrent will run in your default browser, with a revamped interface and better streaming experience.

At the moment, the app accounts for roughly 150 million active monthly users, which makes it the leading torrent client. However, for some reason, the introduction of new features in uTorrent has stalled in recent years. You may have noticed that the client hasn’t really changed for at least 5 years now. This is going to change soon: some interesting updates were promised by the developers – both for uTorrent and BitTorrent Inc.

First of all, BitTorrent Inc. is going to refocus on products that have proven to work, including uTorrent. Previously, the client generated most revenue from toolbar installs, but after web browsers started to frustrate this business, uTorrent developers successfully switched to in-client advertising (it is still its main revenue source). If they move uTorrent to the browser, the client will be able to use modern widgets. Besides, the developers will also integrate better streaming experience, based on new technology, in the client.

In short words, the next version of uTorrent will allow users to stream torrents directly from their browser. In fact, this was the feature of BitTorrent’s own browser project, Maelstrom, which has never been launched. Apparently, many of its features will be present in the new uTorrent, including streaming. The main difference is that you won’t have to install a separate browser, but can use your favorite one.
