      Deadly storm tears through Alabama

Residents walk around through the debris of their neighborhood after a possible tornado ripped through the Trussville, Ala. area in the early hours of Monday, Jan. 23, 2012. Jefferson County sheriff's spokesman Randy Christian said the storm produced a possible tornado that moved across northern Jefferson County around 3:30 a.m., causing damage in Oak Grove, Graysville, Fultondale, Center Point, Clay and Trussville

Theresa Read and Patsy Stanberry look at the storm shelter that Bobby and Jan Sims had in their yard that was part of the damage from a severe storm, in Oak Grove, Ala., Monday, Jan. 23, 2012. The underground garage housed a trailer that the Sims said was their storm shelter. Unfortunately, Bobby Sims died in the storm and his wife Jan is currently hospitalized from injuries she sustained. The couple didn't make it to their storm shelter.

Residents cut fallen trees off of houses in Oak Grove, Ala., Monday, Jan. 23, 2012. after a possible tornado passed through the area. Homes were flattened, windows were blown out of cars and roofs were peeled back in the middle of the night in the community of Oak Grove near Birmingham.

Neighbors and friends pick through the remains of Russ and Amber Butler's home in Oak Grove, Ala., Monday, Jan. 23, 2012 after a possible tornado passed through the area.

Residents comb through debris looking for personal belongings

Wow! So much destruction. I was fortunate to have my home virtually undamaged after these tornadoes but I can't help but feel bad for these people that lost their homes.
I would rather die peacefully in my sleep like my grandfather than screaming in terror like his passengers.

Actually, as far as I know, our town was hardly touched by the tornadoes. We just got the thunderstorms and a tornado warning that only lasted for a few minutes. The entire town was virtually undamaged fortunately. But since it hit Alabama in very much the same way it did on April 27th of last year, it's safe to say it hit home pretty hard. I feel sorry for the victims of last year's tornadoes and the victims of the ones that happened just days ago. But whatever the case, I'm thankful for both me and my family to still be alive. The worst we got was a power outage that only lasted through the night.
I would rather die peacefully in my sleep like my grandfather than screaming in terror like his passengers.

thank god, tornadoes are scarier than hurricanes because they hit at a moments notice without any warning
