Gun toting, DUI driving, pot smoking priest arrested in Alaska
A University of Alaska Fairbanks parish priest was arrested after he was spotted speeding and crossing over the center line according to Alaska State trooper Christopher Bitz. The trouble unfolded when Father Sean P. Thomson, 52, gave the trooper a crinkled receipt instead of his license and registration. Trooper Bitz noted that Father Thompson seemed disoriented during the initial part of the stop.
Then, according to the Daily News-Miner, Trooper Bitz asked if he had any weapons, Thomson mentioned a .357 in the back seat but neglected to mention a 9mm pistol in his back pocket.
Thomson had a bag with a small quantity of marijuana in the pocket of his hoodie sweatshirt, Bitz said.
Thomson registered a breath-alcohol content of 0.247 on a handheld preliminary breath alcohol test machine. That figure is three times the 0.08 level that is one legal standard for intoxication.
Once at the Trooper barracks, Father Thompson refused to submit to a Datamaster test because "(he) said he was drunk and did not feel the test was necessary," Bitz said.
Thompson was eventually charged with refusing to take a chemical alcohol test, DUI, weapons and various drug offenses.
The Diocese has placed Father Thompson on administrative leave pending the outcome of his case. What exactly is 'administrative leave' from religion? Ah, it is called a sabbatical!
