NewTrackon is a new website out there able to index BitTorrent trackers and check them to make sure they are working for you.

As you know, BitTorrent tracker is software located online and recording the IP addresses of torrent clients installed on the machines that have a particular piece of content to share. So, when you connect to those machines (using your favorite torrent client, e.g. uTorrent), the tracker can put them in touch with you. If such trackers are unavailable, you can download content via DHT and PEX, but the problem is that working trackers are not always readily available. Their operators could be understood – standalone trackers cost money to operate, but they generate no revenue and run a risk to become a target for copyright owners.

So, it’s not that easy to find working trackers. Several years ago, a site named TrackOn was launched to track public torrent trackers – a useful resource for people willing to find a stable tracker. However, the site soon ceased to operate, reportedly after its owner’s death.

NewTrackon will start where TrackOn left off, developed by a Spanish student inspired by an interest in torrents. He admitted he took a keen interest in the original TrackOn service 7 years ago and exchanged emails with its creator. Today, NewTrackon provides a list of trackers with over 95% uptime – this means that anyone willing to create a torrent and add a working tracker is able to find one up to the job. Besides, newTrackon allows users (or indeed operators) of public trackers to add them to its database. It takes only 15 seconds for each tracker to be accepted or discarded from the list.
